Background With a proposed General Fund budget of $487,000 in 2010-11, the Commission on the Status of Women (commission) gathers and distributes information and advocates for various issues affecting women. Recommendation We recommend that the Legislature eliminate the commission, thereby resulting in General Fund savings of about $487,000 in 2010-11. In a year when the Legislature faces difficult choices about its priorities in health, education, social services, corrections, and other programs, we believe that this money would produce greater positive effects for women and girls if it were spent directly in these areas. In the absence of the commission, we believe that legislators and other existing advocacy groups would ably fill the role of gathering and distributing information on issues affecting women.

Background

With a proposed General Fund budget of $487,000 in 2010-11, the Commission on the Status of Women (commission) gathers and distributes information and advocates for various issues affecting women.

We recommend that the Legislature eliminate the commission, thereby resulting in General Fund savings of about $487,000 in 2010-11.
