There were over 9 million cases filed in California’s superior courts in 2005-06.

Of this total, about 68 percent were for traffic infractions and misdemeanors. About 13 percent were non-traffic criminal cases, while 17 percent were civil cases. The remaining 2 percent of cases mainly involved juvenile delinquency and dependency cases.

From 1996-97 to 2005-06, the total number of cases filed in California’s courts remained relatively stable with an increase of about 6 percent, compared to a 15 percent increase in the overall state population. While the number of traffic and other criminal filings increased by 13 percent, the number of civil cases declined by roughly 20 percent.
