Financial Aid Award Coverage

Need-Based Grants and Waivers, 2019-20

  Coverage
Tuition Awards
Cal Grant A Provides full tuition coverage for students enrolled at public universities and partial tuition coverage for students enrolled at private colleges and universities. Available for up to four years of full-time study (or its equivalent).
Cal Grant B Provides full tuition coverage for students enrolled at public universities and partial tuition coverage for students enrolled at private colleges and universities. Available for up to four years of full-time study (or its equivalent). Not available to students in their first year of college.
Cal Grant C Provides tuition coverage for students enrolled at private career technical education programs no shorter than 4 months or longer than 2 years. Available for up to two years of full-time study (or its equivalent).
UC Grant Provides tuition and nontuition coverage for students attending the University of California. Available for up to six years of full-time study (or its equivalent).
CSU State University Grant Provides tuition coverage for students attending the California State University who are not eligible for a Cal Grant but have financial need. Available for up to five years of full-time study (or its equivalent).
CCC BOG Fee Waiver Provides full fee coverage for students attending the California Community Colleges. Available for unlimited years and for any number of units taken.
Nontuition Awards
Cal Grant A, Access (Proposed) As proposed in Governor's budget, would provide nontuition coverage for UC and CSU students with dependent children. Available for up to four years of full-time study (or its equivalent).
Cal Grant B, Access Provides nontuition coverage for students enrolled at public and private colleges and universities. As proposed in Governor's budget, would provide larger grants to UC, CSU, and CCC students with dependent children. Available for up to four years of full-time study (or its equivalent).
Cal Grant C, Book and Supply Provides nontuition coverage for students enrolled at public and private career technical education programs no shorter than 4 months or longer than 2 years. As proposed in Governor's budget, would provide larger grants to CCC students with dependent children. Available for up to two years of full-time study (or its equivalent).
CCC Student Success Completion Grant Provides nontuition coverage for CCC students who enroll in 12 or more units per term and develop an education plan. The grant amount increases for those enrolled in 15 or more units per term. Available for up to three years if students are enrolled in basic skills courses, otherwise available for up to two years.
   
Notes 
Though the criteria to qualify vary by program, the programs shown are need based, generally requiring students to meet certain income and asset tests.
The figure shows state and institutional aid programs. It reflects awards for undergraduate, resident students as proposed in the Governor's budget for 2019-20.
Nontuition awards typically may cover any living cost, including rent, food, transportation, books, and supplies.
Financial aid from UC Grants and CSU State University Grants are applied after Cal Grants.
